Korea MFDS Expands “Reduced Sodium” and “Reduced Sugar” Labeling Categories

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has announced Notification No. 2025-68, revising the standards for food labeling claims related to “Reduced Sodium” and “Reduced Sugar”.This amendment is intended to promote the production and distribution of healthier products and to expand consumer choice for reduced-sodium and reduced-sugar food options in the Korean market.
Key Revisions
1. Expansion of “Reduced Sodium” Labeling Categories
The MFDS has added several new food categories eligible for “Reduced Sodium” claims, including:
Bakery products: bagels, baguettes, ciabatta, croissants, sandwich bread, morning rolls, and multigrain bread
Processed meat products: soups, stews, hot pot dishes, and fish sausages
2. Expansion of “Reduced Sugar” Labeling Categories
Additional items are now included under the “Reduced Sugar” labeling scope, such as:
Chocolate and related products: chocolate, milk chocolate, semi-chocolate, and chocolate-based confectionery (e.g., chocolate biscuits, chocolate-shaped snacks)
Purpose and Expected Impact
Through this revision, the MFDS aims to:
Encourage manufacturers to actively develop and market low-sodium and low-sugar alternatives
Strengthen public health initiatives related to sodium and sugar intake reduction
Provide consumers with clear labeling and greater access to healthier product options
This amendment reflects Korea’s continuous efforts to align its food labeling policies with evolving public health objectives and consumer trends toward healthier dietary choices.
